No Water!
Several days this past week the upper part of Monteverde hasn't had water. The spring ran dry and the pipe from the secondary spring had a leak so it took the better part of a day to get it fixed. I walked down the hill after school to my favourite hangout, Stella's, to wash my face. It came back on at 7:00 pm tonite, when they said it would (certainly more reliable than BC Hydro) and we washed dishes, clothes and I jumped in the shower and washed my hair (dry season means it's dusty which means dirty hair.). The family all shower in the morning so I tend to take a long hot shower at night and tonight it was especially welcome.

The bottom line is that I'm busy and engaged and happy because it is new, interesting and yet very familiar. I've been asked to help with science and help them with their environmental education program. Later this week we are going to do a session on fish farming and migration. I've suggested salmon which we are going to do, should be fun...a mix of here and home.

FYI, The Friends School and parents are serious about science and environment/ conservation. I am continuously blown away by the number of birds seven year olds know, that and the grade 9/10 are stream testing and doing basic chemistry and keying out invertebrates. And, all the grade 11/12's are doing physics. No getting out of academic rigour around here.
Anyway, this is the kind of stuff I love doing. Plus I volunteered to help the Monteverde Institute write up a report and I just found two bags of compost for the school garden so lots going on.
One of these days I want to write about the character of Costa Ricans but for now I'm hoping to post this before the internet fails yet again....technology at the end of the road is problematic although they sure seem to have fewer power outages than we do on Saturna.
