Tortuguero
IAnd Torture to get here is the reason it is called Tortuguero.
Alternatively there is an 800 metre airstrip on the beach but after seeing it I'm super happy we took the boat.
This is the first national park created in Costa Rica. It was for the turtles, initially. (Green and leatherback). The park is huge and there are no roads in our out. We came by boat along with the masses. Th experience was something like a cross between a refugee camp and Hat I image it was like boarding Noah's ark. Cecil B DeMille would have loved it. And it was too funny to be snearful.
So, to get here we first took a bus, then transferred to the boat and cruised the river for almost two hours with crocs and butterflies, oh and we went to a butterfly tent on the way here and saw hundreds of all different kinds, none of which landed longenough so we could get a photo.
But, getting here was worth it. What a place. It's an Eco lodge, In between the river, where jaguars cross, and the Caribbean which has rip tides to mark it unswimable and has giant turtle holes where they lay eggs. Our resident birds are unlike anything we have at home. My favourite is the yellow crested egret. There is one that hangs out by the bar here overlooking the river (lounge bird instead of lizard). MG prefers the Montezuma Oropendolas who are very clever mimics and make nests that dangle from the trees. Apparently the males make the nest and the one that makes the best nest gets the girl.
Plus the elusive red eye tree frog...we went on a hunt but could only find the sign
And best of all the lodge has two swimming pools and waterfalls you can sit under. We have a tiny wood and very cute cabin and a clean bathroom. Plus, amazingly they have wifi everywhere. Go figure! Plus the flowers, ginger and heliconias are all in bloom. A tropical paradise.....
Tomorrow we head out at 5:30 to find more birds.
